Richard Harris and Friends - Westin Hotel
Saturday October 7, 2012 - Richard Harris and Friends - Westin Hotel
Here are some images from a retirement party for Diana Harris and Sheilah Cunningham that was at the Westin Hotel last saturday night. Great time, great music, great folks to hang with. For more information and booking info go to Richard Harris & Friends. From jazz to more contemporary they do not disappoint! Wonderful collection of musical talent. I highly recommend them for events and parties, either corporate or private. Richard brings all kinds of established musicians together...
I thought I would share some personal fun work that I have been doing recently the last couple of weekends. One was a jazz concert with Richard Harris & Friends at the Martinez Library and the other was the Dublin Car Show. Both were fun events and here are some of the images after I got done with them.
Augusta Lee Collins is is the West Coast Blues Hall of Fame and is a great friend of mine too! When I said I wanted to do a film portrait with the 4 x 5 view camera I borrowed he was immediately willing to help.
I had the shot in mind and wanted it to be down by the water. We ended up down at the Alameda docks where the USS Hornet is docked. That provided great backdrops and the light worked out great.
The first image is 4 x 5 B&W film and the other two are digital images. I limited myself to one light, sunlight, and utilized a reflector for fill.
Augusta Lee Collins is in the West Coast Blues Hall of Fame. I have known him for about 7 years and first met him while working in Oakland in the Fruitvalle District. He awas playing regularly at a small cafe across from our center.
Turns out Augusta used to play all around the world and played drums with such luminaries as Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Lightning Hopkins, Herbie Hancock and others.
In between being famous and today he spent 5 years homeless on the streets of Oakland. About 12 years ago he decided to get off the streets and is now making a comeback as an artist playing guitar...
During the Ravel String Quartet Project I was looking for a real quartet to photograph, but did not get them in time for the deadline.
This a young quartet group from SF Strings called Del Fuoco. They are amazing to hear!

This was an assignment of an album cover for Maurice Ravel's Sting Quartet in F. It is a somber pice and this was my interpretation of what a cover should look like.
Here are some links to listen to the movements. See what you come up with in your mind:
Now for my adventure!
This was a tough assignment for me! More from frustration than anything else. When Don first gave it I had some great ideas in mind.
The big lesson from this assignment, for me, was that things don't always work out as planned ☺
I am quite familiar with the seamier sides of Oakland, including some of the better graffitti locations. When Chris said he wanted to do some pics I immediately thought of the "Old Yard" near 29th Ave. rail yards. This area, (most of which is behind a locked gate inside a pay for storage yard) has been known for years amonst...
