Solving problems – Product shooting onsite
Most of what we do, if we are doing our best work, is solving problems for the client. In this case, the product is equipment that is heavy, expensive, and moving it to a studio location is not a real option. Plus they really want images that look professional like they were shot in a controlled studio environment. These will be used to sell their instruments online and in print.
It turns out their photographer had moved from the SF Bay Area and they did not want to get into the whole issue of him working long distance. The call was a referral from another photographer who is no longer doing location work. He is a top end product guy and the fact that they recommended us was both exciting and slightly scary. Later I also found out that he had not told them he had moved, but acted like he had to schedule in in when he had time.
Once we made contact and I knew the scope of the work I made an appointment to see the equipment and where in their facility I could set up to shoot. Turns out they had a nice sized room with a 10 foot high ceiling that I could work with. What I realized was that getting the machines on top of a background would not be easy. They already were on rolling grey lab tables. So I snapped a couple shots and went back and mocked up what I could do with a drop-out and some other Photoshop work to make them look like they were shot on a background.
A day of shooting and a part day in Photoshop and they got the images they wanted. Note the files are also setup so that, if they want a different color, they just have to change one layer to the base color they want, or they can turn off the base and gradient and drop in another background. Client happy!

And this is what the final results look like…
